NICA – Universe in the Lab. Video lectures

The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) prepared materials for holding events for schoolchildren on the theme "NICA - The Universe in the Laboratory" by the Day of Russian Science. In this video academician Grigory Trubnikov will talk about the research that scientists from different countries of the world will be carrying out at the NICA accelerator complex.

Materials are intended for schoolchildren of 8-11 grades. They are a video film consisting of 7 parts. The total duration is about 35 minutes. The duration of individual parts is from 5 to 7 minutes. Materials can be used as a whole, or as separate parts in the study of various sections of physics and astronomy.

A story about the role of science in our life and questions of the modern scientists.

2. The Universe had a beginning

A story about the formation of modern ideas about the structure of the universe, about what the world around us is made of, when and how our universe was born and how it developed from the Big Bang to our days.

3. Quark-gluon plasma

A story about what phase transitions of the existing matter in our nature, what is a quark-gluon plasma, what relation does it have to neutron stars and to the birth of our universe. And also, where and how scientists are going to receive this mysterious state of matter.

4. Tools helping us look into the heart of matter

In this part, students will get acquainted with the basics of accelerator technology, find out why accelerators and colliders are needed, how they are arranged and what physical laws their work is based on.

5. Accelerator complex NICA

A story about the most complicated technical structure – the NICA accelerator complex, about the nodes and working principle. You can see the demonstration of nuclei's path from the source of heavy ions to the detector. Students learn how to use accelerators, colliders and detectors to study the structure of matter.

6. Complex NICA and progress of technology

A fascinating story about applied research in the accelerator complex, the use of heavy ions in materials science, medicine, radiobiology. Students learn how experiments on the accelerator can prepare cosmonauts for long space expeditions.

7. New discoveries at NICA are waiting for you!

In conclusion, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Grigory Trubnikov will tell you about what specialists are needed to work in the project and how current students and schoolchildren will be able to become pioneers of the riddles of the Universe.
The film is intended for a wide audience and can be used in schools as a cognitive and educational material in after-hour activities and in physics and astronomy lessons in the study of such sections as "Structure of matter", "Modification of the aggregate state of matter", "Structure and evolution of the universe", "Methods of scientific knowledge and the physical picture of the world", "Physics of the atomic nucleus and elementary particles".
